Drum Lessons Via Webcam

If you would like to study with me, but are unable to get to my studio (located in Exeter UK), I also teach private drum lessons over Skype (or other online platforms if need be). Each lesson lasts an hour and costs £35 (GBP), payable via PayPal or bank transfer. Beginners to advanced, the minimum age requirement is 10 years. Lessons are available on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays.

Webcam Drum Lessons

You do not have to commit to a string of lessons. You are welcome to book a single lesson to see how you get on, and find out whether you would like to continue. If you decide you want to reserve a regular lesson slot, these are available at weekly or fortnightly intervals.

I have been teaching the drums since 1998. In addition to my experience as a private drum tutor, I have also taught a music BTEC course at The Academy of Music & Sound and as a peripatetic music teacher for Exeter University’s music scholarship programme. I also have many years of live playing experience, touring all over the world, working with various bands and artistes.

My Webcam Setup

For webcam lessons I stream from multiple webcams, so you will be able to see exactly what is going on as I demonstrate rhythms and techniques. I will send you relevant PDFs to accompany your lessons, taken from a wealth of drum scores and lesson sheets that I have written and collected over the years. I also have the ability to notate music live-on-screen during the lesson. This is especially helpful to better explain music theory.

Your webcam Setup

Do not worry if you have not got numerous webcams and expensive microphones. It is not necessary for you to have a complex setup like mine. In fact your setup could be as simple as a smartphone positioned next to your drumset or practice pad.

Here are some things to consider for your lesson setup:

  • A free Skype account,
  • A good, stable internet connection,
  • A camera & microphone (a laptop, tablet or smartphone works fine),
  • A device for reading music notation (you might prefer to use a separate device from the one running Skype),
  • A suitable camera position (try to mount your webcam or device in a suitable place to show me as much of your drums and yourself as possible),
  • Headphones/Mic combo (optional, but useful to eliminate certain sound issues).

I am happy to connect with you, in advance of your first lesson, so that you can check your setup and connection… Just ask.

More About The Lessons

Lessons are for all levels of player, from complete beginners picking up the drumsticks for the first time, through to drummers who have been playing for years but want to “brush up” on a few things, or gain some new ideas and inspiration.

Do not worry if you are brand new to the drums and have not yet got a drumset to practise on. It is a great idea to have some lessons first, to be sure that you are really enjoying learning the drums, before spending money on equipment. For your first lessons over Skype you would just need to purchase a pair of drumsticks and a practice pad. Later when it comes time for you to purchase a full set of drums, I will be happy to advise you on what to buy.

Some of the topics that I teach include:

  • Time
  • Rhythm
  • Hand & Foot Technique
  • Songs
  • Grooves (in various styles)
  • Improvisation
  • Creativity
  • Coordination / Independence
  • Dynamics
  • Reading / Writing Music
  • Listening
  • Drum Fills
  • Music Theory
  • Drumkit Set Up & Tuning

Each of my students gets access to their shared online lesson diary. It contains all of my notes & reminders from every lesson attended. Topics covered can be easily searched within the diary. It also contains additional video & audio downloads to help further develop material covered in lessons.
